City break · 2 days in Bamberg, all on foot
A weekend is enough to experience the best of Bamberg: UNESCO old town, cathedral, Little Venice, Franconian beer and a relaxed Sunday on the hill. This guide gives you an easy 2-day plan – and where to stay right in the middle. Book direct, save 7% with code DIRECT7.

Old Town Hall, Little Venice, the cathedral with the Bamberg Horseman and the rose garden of the New Residence – the highlights sit close together, all on foot from our door.
A Sunday walk up to Michelsberg, a beer at Spezial-Keller with old-town views, and a stroll through the Grüner Markt – Franconian life at its best.
Our rooms and apartments are central – no car, short distances, more time for the city. With DIRECT7 you save 7% on direct bookings.
Start at Maximiliansplatz (Maxplatz) and stroll along Lange Straße to the Old Town Hall on the bridge – the city's most photographed view. Continue to Little Venice with the former fishermen's houses by the water, then up to the cathedral square with Bamberg Cathedral, the Bamberg Horseman and the imperial tombs. Next door, the Old Court and the rose garden of the New Residence tempt with views over the rooftops.
In the evening, head for Sandstraße – the historic brewery and pub street with Schlenkerla and its famous Rauchbier. From our rooms on Franz-Ludwig-Straße, the Old Town Hall (5 min), Little Venice (7 min) and the cathedral (12 min) are easily walkable.
Begin Sunday gently with breakfast at Café Müller on Maxplatz or homemade in your holiday apartment. Then the climb to Michelsberg with the former monastery of St Michael and views over the entire old town is worth it. If you like, stop at Spezial-Keller on Stephansberg – one of the finest beer gardens in town.
To finish, stroll through the Grüner Markt with regional produce – ideal for packing a few Franconian treats before heading back to the ICE.
For the shortest distances we recommend the rooms on Franz-Ludwig-Straße (2 min to Maxplatz). If you'd like something more homely as a couple or family, choose the TB 5 holiday apartment or the H4 old-town maisonette with private roof terrace. Yes. The old town is compact and walkable – in one day you see the main sights, on the second there's time for beer cellars, Michelsberg and the market. For more calm, an extended weekend is worth it.
The Old Town Hall, Little Venice, Bamberg Cathedral with the Bamberg Horseman, the New Residence with its rose garden, Michelsberg and at least one beer cellar or brewery tavern.
From Franz-Ludwig-Straße it's 5 min to the Old Town Hall, 7 to Little Venice and 12 to the cathedral – all easily on foot.
By train: Bamberg is an ICE stop on the Berlin – Nuremberg – Munich line. From the main station everything is walkable or reachable by bus – more relaxed than by car.
No. The old town is pedestrianised, all highlights and our stays are walkable. Parking in the old town is scarce anyway.
