What is Bamberg's Christmas market?
Under the motto 'magic of Christmas', Bamberg's Christmas market spreads across Maximiliansplatz (Maxplatz) in the heart of the old town. Wooden stalls with mulled wine, Franconian sausages, gingerbread and crafts, a large illuminated Christmas tree and weekend music programmes.
A Bamberg speciality is the nativity trail (Krippenweg): around 35 nativity scenes displayed by churches, shops and public squares across the old town – an atmospheric walk through the UNESCO World Heritage site in winter light.
When and where does it take place?
The Christmas market traditionally runs from late November to 23 December, daily through Advent. The exact 2026 dates are announced by the City of Bamberg in autumn. The main location is Maximiliansplatz; the nativity trail spreads across the old town between Grüner Markt, the cathedral and Little Venice.
From the Franz-Ludwig-Straße boarding house it's 2 minutes on foot to Maxplatz. From the TB 5 holiday apartment it's about 15 minutes, from the H4 old-town maisonette a few minutes – all walkable, no car.
Where to stay for the Christmas market?
For the shortest route to the market we recommend the rooms on Franz-Ludwig-Straße (2 min to Maxplatz). If you'd like your own kitchen and more space – for an Advent weekend with the family, say – choose the TB 5 holiday apartment or the H4 old-town maisonette with roof terrace.
