Bamberg in winter: 5 highlights off the tourist trail

When the crowds leave, Bamberg shows its quieter side. Our five favourite winter spots between mulled wine and empty alleys.

Bamberg in winter: 5 highlights off the tourist trail

Bamberg in winter is a different city. Instead of tour groups you see locals with dogs, instead of selfie sticks the steam from mulled-wine stands. Visit between early January and early March and you basically get the city to yourself – at noticeably lower prices than in summer.

We live here all year round and we'll be honest: winter is our favourite season in Bamberg. It's quiet, the light is soft, the breweries are warm, and the Hain riverside walk can be so still that you hear your own footsteps.

1. A walk through the Hain

Bamberg's central park runs along the Regnitz and is almost empty in winter. Go on a clear morning, do a lap, then have breakfast at Café Müller or Hofmanns. Few better ways to start a Sunday.

Tip: when the Regnitz actually freezes between December and February, glassy ice forms in the calmer stretches and reflects the bridges. Photographers, bring a tripod and gloves.

2. Brewery walk in the snow

The classic Five-Seidla brewery tour works just as well in winter – with fewer people competing for table space. Solid shoes, walk from Spezial-Keller via Mahrs Bräu to Greifenklau, snow crunching between stops.

Reckon on a relaxed four hours, with a half-litre and a snack at every brewery. In winter most beer cellars heat their indoor rooms generously – the perfect break after 30 minutes outside.

3. Symphony concerts

The Bamberg Symphony Orchestra plays almost weekly during the winter season. Tickets from €15 for students, from €25 otherwise. World-class music in a city of 80,000 is rarer than you'd think – the Symphoniker rank among Germany's best orchestras internationally.

Not sure what to listen to? Open dress rehearsals on Thursday mornings are just €8 and a fascinating look at how a piece comes together. Combine with a walk across the Regnitz and lunch at the nearby Hofbräu am Kranen.

4. First spring in a café

On the first sunny days in February, locals migrate to south-facing cafés. Our picks: Café Abseits near Pödeldorfer station (breakfast), Café Müller on Maxplatz (cake), and Klein on Stephansberg (filter coffee and afternoon wine).

5. Sunset at Michaelsberg

When the wind drops, the view from the former monastery garden at Michaelsberg is actually better in winter than in summer – no haze, clear sight all the way to Franconian Switzerland. Bring a blanket, bring a thermos, prepare for goosebumps.

The walk up from Domplatz takes about ten minutes. In winter the upper path can be icy, so wear proper shoes. Not in the mood for the climb? Domplatz itself has a stunning blue-hour atmosphere of its own.
