Day trips from Bamberg – 5 ideas for a second weekend
Spending a few days in Bamberg and want to see more? These five destinations are all under 60 minutes away and worth at least half a day.

Bamberg is a perfect base. The A70 and A73 motorways cross just outside town, trains run every half hour to Würzburg, Coburg and Nuremberg, and Franconian Switzerland starts right on the doorstep. If you're staying more than two nights, reserve a day for the surrounding region.
We've picked five destinations we regularly recommend ourselves. All under an hour away, all reachable without a car – some even by bike.
1. Franconian Switzerland – hiking and breweries
Directly northeast of Bamberg lies Franconian Switzerland: a low mountain range with cliffs, caves, castles and – you guessed it – even more breweries than the city itself. On the 50 km between Forchheim and Bayreuth there are over 70 breweries.
Our day plan: drive or bus to Gößweinstein in the morning (45 min), see the pilgrimage basilica and walk towards Behringersmühle. Lunch at the Held brewery in Oberailsfeld or at Hufeisen in Pottenstein. Back in the late afternoon.
By train, Pottenstein is reachable via Pegnitz (1 hour), but the car is more flexible.
2. Coburg – fortress and English garden
Coburg is 50 minutes north by train (RE direct from the main station). The Veste Coburg is one of Germany's largest preserved castle complexes; the town centre with its Marktplatz and Schlossplatz is compact and walkable.
Tip: Thursday is market day on Marktplatz. Lunch at Café Prinz Albert (by Schlossplatz), afternoon walk through the Hofgarten and the climb up to the Veste – about 30 minutes via the castle steps.
3. Nuremberg – big-city day
Nuremberg is 40 minutes on the S-Bahn (no change). For a big-city day: Hauptmarkt, Kaiserburg, Albrecht Dürer's house, and the Nuremberg bratwurst at Bratwurstherzla. In winter, the Christkindlesmarkt is a reason to travel on its own.
Families head to the Deutsche Bahn museum (right by the main station) or the toy museum. Interested in history: the Documentation Centre Nazi Party Rally Grounds is an important, demanding half-day experience.
4. Würzburg – wine and Residence
Würzburg is 50 minutes west by regional express. The Residence with its UNESCO heritage staircase and the Hofgarten is one of the most significant baroque palaces in Europe – definitely grab an audio guide.
Then lunch on the market square, a glass of Franconian wine at one of the Heckenwirtschaften on the Stein vineyard slope (30-minute climb from the station, with views across the whole city). If the weather plays along: sunset from Marienberg fortress is unbeatable.
5. Vierzehnheiligen and Schloss Banz
An insider tip for architecture lovers: the Vierzehnheiligen pilgrimage church (Balthasar Neumann, high rococo) and the Schloss Banz opposite form one of the most spectacular ensembles in Franconia. 35 minutes north of Bamberg by car, best combined with lunch at the Bräustüberl Vierzehnheiligen.
By train: to Bad Staffelstein (25 min), then bus or a short walk. On a clear day the view from the pilgrimage church across the Main valley alone makes the trip worth it.
Tickets and tips
For all train day trips, the Bayern-Ticket is often the best deal (from €27 for one person, +€9 per additional traveller). It covers all regional transport in Bavaria – S-Bahn, RE, bus and tram. From Bamberg station you can reach all of the above with it.
Coming by car: Bamberg has a free Park-and-Ride lot at Heinrichsdamm with a direct bus link to the centre. On request we can arrange a private parking space – just ask.
