Beer city Bamberg · breweries, cellars & Franconian food
Bamberg is one of the densest beer cities in the world: over ten breweries in the old town, the famous smoked beer (Rauchbier) and rustic beer gardens on the hills. This local guide shows you the best brewery taverns, cellars and restaurants – all a few minutes' walk from our stays.

Schlenkerla with its legendary Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier, Klosterbräu, Ambräusianum and Fässla are right in the old town – 5 to 12 minutes on foot from Franz-Ludwig-Straße.
On Stephansberg and Kaulberg the cellars beckon: Spezial-Keller, Wilde Rose Keller and Greifenklau – beer gardens on the hillside with views over the old town, a summer must.
From Schäuferla to Bamberger Hörnla to sausages from the Grüner Markt: Bamberg is Franconian on the plate too. Cooking yourself? Prepare fresh market ingredients in our holiday apartments.
Bamberg is world-famous for its Rauchbier – malt kilned over a beechwood fire gives it its unmistakable smoky taste. The best-known addresses are the brewery taverns Aecht Schlenkerla (Dominikanerstraße) and Spezial (Obere Königstraße). If you prefer it milder, try the Ungespundete (U) at Mahrs Bräu or a Kellerbier at Keesmann in Wunderburg.
Classic city-centre breweries such as Klosterbräu, Ambräusianum and Fässla are right in the old town and a few minutes on foot from our rooms on Franz-Ludwig-Straße – ideal for a brewery stroll.
A Bamberg speciality are the beer cellars (beer gardens) on the hills around the old town. Spezial-Keller on Stephansberg offers perhaps the finest sunset view in town, alongside Greifenklau and Wilde Rose Keller. On warm summer evenings all of Bamberg is out here – a beer on the hill is a must.
The cellars sit just above the old town; from Franz-Ludwig-Straße it's about a 15-minute walk uphill – worth it for the view.
For Franconian cuisine the brewery taverns are the first choice – Schäuferla, sausages and seasonal dishes, hearty and good. For breakfast and coffee, try Café Müller on Maxplatz or Café Abseits. If you cook yourself, stock up at the Grüner Markt with regional produce – just a few steps from our stays.
